Modern Chiropractic began in the late 1800’s when Daniel David Palmer, a self-educated teacher and healer of USA performed the first spinal manipulation on a patient.  Today, chiropractic is the third largest area of medicine and is the largest complementary and Alternative Medicine health profession.

The word chiropractic comes from the Greek words meaning ‘treatment by hand’ which is exactly what chiropractors in the West do- they use their hands to manipulate the body and promote healing and wellness.

Dr Shyam S Sharma, who is the Head of the Department of Holistic Medicine at the Indian Spinal Injuries Center in New Delhi says ‘ The term chiropractic used in the West tantamount to the same term as the Holistic Medicine approach prevalent in India as an ancient scientific technique, wherein, treatment is done by using only the fingers and hands.’

The Department of Holistic Medicine at the Indian Spinal Injuries Center, New Delhi is the brainchild of Maj. H.P.S.Ahluwalia, Chairman of the Center, who believes that there is nothing better than the age old ancient techniques of natural processes of healing, be it treatment by hand manipulations or holistic lifestyle and nutrition counseling. Surgeries are inevitable for some patients but should be the last option. With this vision in mind, he inspired the setting up of this Department at Indian Spinal Injuries Center, New Delhi in 1999. 

This Department is located on the first floor of the Auditorium, at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre and is run by Dr Shyam S Sharma who is the Head of the Department.  The department is one of the most well equipped and comprehensive units undertaking diagnosis of treatment of disorders of the muscoskelatal and nervous systems. All latest and modern diagnostic techniques are used  (such as MRI,X-Ray, Lab test) alongwith  specific natural techniques that involve hands-on manipulation of the articulations of the body. The Department also offers nutrition and healthy lifestyle counseling.

Department of Holistic medicine – A department specializing only in Spinal Care

The Department also specializes in Chronic Lumbar Spondylosis, Cervical Spondylosis, Disc prolapsed, backache, knee injury , any form of sports injury and special program for Paraplegic patients. 

We believe that one of the main causes of pain and disease is the misalignment of the vertebrae in the spinal column. Through the use of manual detection, carefully applied pressure, and manual manipulations of the vertebrae and joints, we are able to relieve pressure and irritation on the nerves, restore joint mobility and help return the body’s homeostatis.

Most of the patients who have had chronic back pain, cervical spondylosis, Disc prolapsed, and have tried modern systems of medicines with not much relief, alongwith those who have been advised surgery by orthopedic surgeons have come for treatment to the Department of Holistic Medicine. Most of these patients have improved significantly by natural bone manipulations and have not required any form of surgery. 

Dr Shyam S Sharma, Head of the Department of Holistic Medicine, has for the first time in India, evolved a Spinal Program, which brings Relief, Cure and Prevention, all under one roof.

He believes in working alongwith specialized doctors from various fields, be it an Orthopedic, Neurosurgeon or a Neurologist to bring immediate relief to patients, by using pain management techniques, medication etc.

The use of specially designed spinal supporters for vertebrae alignment and management is a unique creation in itself by Dr Shyam S Sharma. The success rate of these spinal supporters is quite high amongst the patients. The vertebrae alignment is disturbed in most of these cases. After diagnosis, the vertebrae is realigned and kept in position by Spinal Supporters. Patients are advised certain precautions so that vertebrae alignment does not get disturbed subsequently.  

What can you expect from your first visit to our Department ?

After studying and discussing your health history, which will be a great deal of information, we then go on to examination to confirm any early ideas we may have about your problem. Once all the lab tests, reports, X-rays are checked we will discuss this with you before the procedure is undertaken. At this stage, you have all the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.  Once the initial consultation is over, treatment may be offered immediately.

The Department is headed by Dr Shyam Sunder Sharma. He has been practicing in this field for the past eight years and has established a name for himself in the field of Holistic Medicine only for Spinal Care. He is the first doctor who has for the first time introduced the concept of working in this area alongwith a team of specialized doctors from various streams of medicine. He follows the natural manipulations concept in a very scientific and modern manner.

Major Ahluwalia  is a recipient of the Government of India’s Padma Shri and Arjuna Award and was also awarded the Condor-de-oro by the Government of Argentina. He is the Trustee of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust and also the Chairman of the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi.
