Training and Research Division 


In pursuance of the policy of the ISIC, Med. Edu. & Research Div. has been set up in Oct.99 under the direct control of Dr. A.K.Mukherjee, an eminent authority on Rehabilitation and Ex. D.G.H.S. Govt. of India, who would guide all the Training and Education activities of ME & R Div.

The exact Role and Functioning of ME & R Div. is centered around the following: 

Continuing Medical Education
  • Developing Trained Manpower
  • Setup Research Projects in Clinical / Paraclinical Fields 
With a view to widening the scope of the Teaching / Training Program of the Medical Education and Research Division, it is contemplated to setup Collaborative Teaching Faculty at the ISIC to organise and run Certificate, Diploma and Degree Courses. 

It is intended to conduct 3 Months Certificate Courses for Advanced Rehabilitation Program for Spinal Cord Injuries and Locomoter Disabilities for Physio / Occupation Therapists, commencing from August 2000

Towards Research , action is in hand to setup a project, with the grant of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, for carrying our research in Regeneration of Neurological Tissues.

Towards these major goals the ME & R Div. has conducted short courses under a well planned Training Calendar covering the period of October 99 to March 2000.
  
Summary of Activities and Achievements of Medical Education and Research Division

The erudite vision. & philosophy of Dr. A. K. Mukherjee, Ex. Director General Health Services, 
Govt. of India, who after joining the ISIC lent a new dimension to the goal of ISIC by setting, up 
the Medical Education & Research Division (M E & P.. D) thus providing a platform for pursuing 
academic activities related to the clinical contents of the ISIC. In the wake of it, Dr. Mukherjee 
as the Chairman of the M E & R D, has been the prime mover in initiating M E & R D to launch CMS 
Programme which over a short period of 3 yrs, made its mark & wherein Professionals/Para medical 
drawn from PSUs, Teaching Institutions & Pvt. Hospitals, across the country were trained in the 
field off' SCI management & thus, the programme has gone a long way in meeting the requirement of 
the Nation : making available knowledgeable & trained manpower for taking care of persons with SCI 
disability.


The Medical Education & Research Division plans the teaching cum training activities, centered 
around the following objectives:
  • Develop Trained Manpower for Rehabilitation Challenges.
  • Maintain. thrust on CME : sharing updated relevant professional knowledge / information with 
    Medical Fraternity working in the field of rehabilitation of disabilities.
  • Introduce 3 Month PG Certificate Courses in the Training Year 2002-03 by September /October 2002.
  • Establish a Collaborative Teaching Faculty at the ISIC.
  • Set﷓up Research Project to undertake research work in Para﷓clinical field related to SCI.

Since September 99 to January 2002 total no. of 15 Courses have been conducted under CME targeting on General, Ortho. & Neuro. Surgeons, Senior Nurses, Physio./Occupational Therapist & Medical Social Workers & wherein a total of 360 such Professionals & Personnel have gone through the training at the ISIC without taking resort to advertisements in Daily Newspapers.

During conduct of CME Courses, the ISIC has interacted with a number of leading Medical Organisations, PSUs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home who have subscribed to these Courses by sending their delegates & even one delegate from Royal National Hospital, UK also joined one of the Courses; Resource Persons drawn from Teaching Institutions like Delhi University, JNU &. Prestigious Medical Institutions like MINIS, Safdarjung, Rehabilitation Council of India, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, National Institute of Health & Family Welfare. The Programme of the Courses has sent the word around & set abuzz the existence of the ISIC, its stellar role, especially in training the manpower in the field of Spinal Care & the Rehabilitation Programme.

At the behest of the Trained Nurses Association of India, THAI, a delegation of 42 Nurses, coming 
from all over the Country, including THAI Staff, was given a exposure on "Nursing Management of 
Patients with Spinal Injuries" & "Rehabilitation in Trauma Management" on Jan. 30', 2001.

A Batch of Sr. Faculty Members & 60 Students of M. A: (Final Year) from Delhi School of Social Work, 
Delhi UT University visited the. ISIC under the Orientation Programme of the DSSW, wherein they were 
briefed on the role & functioning of the ISIC &, thereafter, they were taken on a conducted tour of the Institute.

The DSSW has also recognised ISIC as one of the Institutions for Concurrent / Block Field Work 
Training of Students pursuing M. A. (Final Year) Social Work. Under the same MoU, Ms. Ruchi Chopra & 
Ms. Darnyanti Bhowmick are attached to pursue the Concurrent Field Work, 2 Days a Week - Tuesdays & Thursdays, for the duration of the Academic Session of DSSW & they will follow a Training Programme, which has been planned jointly by the Faculty of DSSW & M E & R D.

The ISIC is participating in the Collaborating National Teaching Programme B. Ed. (Special Education 
Distance Education), as jointly offered by the Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University & Rehabilitation Council of India for the first time to the aspiring Teachers for imparting education to disabled children. Presently, 30 Teacher Students have been enrolled & assigned to the Study Centre No. 802, as functioning under the M E & R D to impart education in Loco﷓motor Disability & Cerebral Palsy to the Students.

The Students are required to complete the Course in a minimum period of 14 months, covering an 
exhaustive Syllabi both on Non Disability Pedagogical & Disability Area Subjects relating to Locomotor Disability, including spinal injuries; it entails meticulous planning of day to day Curriculum & making available trained & qualified Resource Persons / Counselors in deference to the qualification stipulations as laid down by the M P B O U & who are being co﷓opted from leading Medical Institutions & Hospitals in New Delhi.

These Students will be attending the 3~a Contact Sessions in the month of July / August 2002 respectively, prior to appearing in the final examination in September 2002. Their eligibility to undertake the final examination will be assessed at the Study Centre of the ISIC, taking into consideration their performance & periodical evaluation thereof.

Under the repeated Training Capsule as designed for CME will commenced scheduled Courses w.e.f. July 2002. The sequence of these Courses are as under
