Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) is pleased to announce the official opening of Department of Assistive Technology (DAT) in its campus with the collaboration of University of Pittsburgh, USA. To overcome the above limitations, the DAT at ISIC will be one of its kind in India which will work on the innovative system of assistive technology delivery system.
Objectives of DAT:
- To provide the technology solutions to persons with disabilities as per their individual needs so that they could achieve their educational, vocational, transitional and independent living goals.
- To involve persons with disabilities, their families rehabilitations and general society in the process of training, awareness and the proper application of Assistive Technology to promote better quality of life and independence
The services include:

Assessment and evaluation for appropriate assistive devices: Manual wheelchair, walking aids (crutches, walker, sticks etc.) based on patient’s controls in all environments.
Provide better seating and positioning system for improving postural stability and alignment to increase comfort and sitting tolerance and decrease fatigue using proper custom designed cushions.

On-site device customization and fabrication for wheelchair and its various accessories (arm/leg rest, lap tray, sliding board etc.)

Counseling on independent living skills, home and transportation modifications
Computer Access and design of adaptive computer aids
Short term loan of assistive technology equipments to try out at work, home and school
Providing academic programs to train upcoming professionals in the field of assistive technology

Assistive Technology Team:
Nekram Upadhyay - Recipient of Ford Fellow (2004-2006) is currently working as the Rehabilitation Engineering Technologist. He acquired specialization Assistive Technology program from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His job profile entails assessing, evaluating and prescribing the appropriate device according to the individual needs of the patients, also taking care of their seating/positioning, home, worksite and transportation adaptations.
Jyoti Vidhani - Recipient of Heinz fellowship (2005-2006) is currently working as the Programme Manager on the Assistive technology project. During her fellowship, she studied courses on rehabilitation counseling at the University of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh, USA. Her job entails managing overall functions of the assistive technology program; also guiding the patients on alternative sources of funding to acquire assistive devices. She also provides counseling on independent living skills and vocational goals.
