Physiotherapy
Indian Spinal, Injuries Centre (ISIC) is South Asia's 's most advanced and India's only hospital to offer comprehensive medical management to the spinal injured. It is an Indo-Italian venture located conveniently close to the International Airport in Indian capital, New Delhi. In addition to treating disorders of the spine, ISIC is fully equipped with infrastructure and qualified personnel for complete health care. Various departments of ISIC provide comprehensive medical management services - diagnosis, treatment, therapy and rehabilitation support to patients challenged by physical disabilities and diseases. The Physiotherapy Department is one of the many
well-equipped departments at ISIC with facilities for Hydrotherapy, Electrotherapy, Ultrasonic therapy, cryotherapy as well as alternative therapies like Acupressure and Acupuncture

Physiotherapy is the. treatment of any disease, disability or malfunction of the body through highly effective therapeutical procedures that involve external stimuli like heat, radiation water pressure electric currents etc.
Physiotherapy modalities are essentially
drug-free and involve exercises and applications that facilitate pain relief, enable therapeutical access to deep seated parts of the body and speed up the healing process. Almost every surgery requires the use of physiotherapy before and after the operation.
Physiotherapy is most effective in cases related to muscle sprains and tissue ruptures; external injuries and wounds like swelling, burns and sports injuries bone and joint problems as well as skin and dental problems

Hot Moist Packs
In this method of heat therapy canvas bags filled with hydrophilic substances and stored in thermo
statistically-controlled units are applied to the affected areas of the body, This method is useful for the treatment of external physical ailments, especially uneven surfaces of the body because the packs can be easily moulded to a comfortable fit.
Paraffin Wax Bath
Body tissues are provided warmth using melted wax applied on the skin. The advantage that this method has is that the wax forms a layer around the targeted body and completely covers the area being treated
Ice Therapy
Ice therapy also called cryotherapy involves the application of ice to cool an affected body part, providing relief from pain and enhance healing Ice is used therapeutically to
- Reduce swelling, spasticity
- Facilitate muscle contraction
- Increase muscle endurance
- Reduce haematoma formation
- Prevent Pressure Sores.
- Promote wound healing
Alternative Therapy
Indian Spinal Injuries Centre is equipped with the skills and infrastructure for providing alternative therapy to patients. The alternative healing systems being utilised currently include Ayurveda, Acupressure, Acupuncture.
ISIC has developed through its extensive research, in Ayurvedic massage oil and balm which is being used
effectively for the treatment of muscle and joint pains
Therapy Devices
Indian Spinal Injuries Centre is equipped with the file latest and most effective devices used in the field of physiotherapy. These include:
Motorised Rehabilitation Device
The motorised device uses anti-spasm control to provide passive, assisted- active and fully- active movement therapy. It corrects and prevents problems related to inactivity and is specially particularly effective for wheelchair access
Therapy Matresses
A treatment technique called the Detensor Method .is used at ISIC in which a specially constructed mattress is used by the patient for sleeping and a Therapy Mat is used to lie down and perform the recommended exercises under expert supervision in the daytime
Hydrotherapy
Water has always proved to be a boon for therapy. Because of the Buoyant effect of water and subsequent ease of movement, it is easier for the patients, especially those who are over 50 years of age, to perform activities under water which are otherwise difficult and painful. Hydrotherapy makes use of water, due to its facilitative properties, to reduce pain, increase mobility accelerate the process of healing and recovery. It is believed that water provides oxygen to the pain affected area, thereby doing the work of a soothing massage on muscles
The Indian Spinal Injuries Centre uses a heated swimming pool for providing water therapy to patients.
Hydrotherapy is very useful and effective in the treatment of various orthopeadic and neurological problems like:
- Arthritis- stiff shoulders
- Post fracture stiffness
- Back pain
- Multiple sclerosis
- Polio
- Ankle Sprain
- Haematoma
- Rheumatoid arthritis etc
Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy involves the use of waves and mild electrical currents to relieve pain, stimulate and soothe hard-to-reach muscles, and reduce swelling. It is a clean, swift and painless method of healing.
Electrotherapy at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre comprises different procedures suited to different ailments.
Interferential Therapy (IFI)
Two medium frequency currents are used in Interferential Therapy to produce a low frequency current which is subsequently used for treatment. The effects of this form of therapy include pain relief, reduction of swelling, deep seated muscle, stimulation and faster healing.
Interferential Therapy is specially effective for treating
- Soft tissue injuries
- Disc Lesions
- Problems of hard-to-reach muscles like those in the pelvic region
Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation (TNS)
Pain relief is obtained in TNS by the application of pulsed wave forces. Electrodes placed on the skin emit waves which reduce or remove pain in chronic pain syndrome. Nerves and muscles are stimulated with galvanic currents.
Ultrasonic Therapy
Ultrasonic Therapy makes use of sound waves which are beyond the power of hearing i.e., above the audible range. These waves provide a deep form of micro massage by improving circulation and removing waste, thus causing pain relief. This therapy is effective for the treatment of localised pain.
Heat Therapy
Heat Therapy uses modalities varying from treatment by radio waves, infrared radiation, hot moist packs, to wax baths. Different modalities are used for different ailments as ISIC's specialists see fit.
Short Wave Diathermy (SWD)
SWD is a deep heat treatment wherein high frequency radio waves are used to deep and superficial lesions. It is quite effective in treating large areas of the body and provides relief in the case of:
- Soft tissue injuries
- Degenerative and inflammatory arthropathaes
- Sinusitis
- Slow healing wounds
- Deep-routed pelvic structure ailments
Microwave Diathermy (MWD)
MWD is a deep-routed modality which uses high frequency radio waves. Its depth of penetration is deeper than infra red but less than short wave diathermy.
Infra Red Radiation
Infra Red Radiation is a superficial heating modality, frequently used as an effective means of relieving pain. It increases blood flow through the tissue and removes waste products from the targeted area.
