1. ISIC- Indo American Spine Alliance Fellowship – 2019

Six Month Combined Travelling Fellowship

Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in collaboration with IASA is pleased to offer a Six Month Combined Traveling Fellowship program. This opportunity is specifically designed for orthopedic surgeons &neurosurgeons with interest and experience in spine surgery

The Combined Traveling Fellowship focuses on on a strong academic and clinical experience in India, in addition it also provides an opportunity to the fellow to travel to an IASA approved site outside of India (e.g. US, UK), providing an internationally rounded spine fellowship. The selected fellows shall be paid a stipend during the fellowship at ISIC along with sponsored accommodation

Experience
Each Fellowship will be supported for 6 months: 5 months in ISIC and one month abroad; . With regard to the international component, ISIC will work with the approved fellow’s special interests to find an appropriate match.
ISIC along with IASA strives to ensure that each incoming fellow has a positive and valuable experience at the approved institution. Therefore, we require adherence to a basic curriculum from all interested applicant institutions consisting of the following:

  • Participate in weekly departmental activities (grand rounds, research, morbidity and mortality, education, etc.) at hosting institution
  • Observe and participate in clinical patient evaluation
  • Observe and participate in various spine surgeries as scheduled
  • Participate in rounds and post surgery follow-up
  • Exposure in spine surgeries along with other senior surgeons in the institution
  • Observe and participate in research activities of the institute

International Sites:

NOTE: Placement of the Fellows is strictly at IASA’s discretion.
Once a fellowship is approved, the fellow will be provided with an educational experience outside India. Fellows will be mentored by select spine surgeons at accredited, academic institutions, in US and Europe. Each institution will bring unique aspects to the fellowship experience depending upon the clinical focus and the expertise of the hosting surgeon. Special interests of the fellows will be taken into consideration by the host institution as well, resulting in a complete and well balanced spinal experience.

Program Support:

Domestic Fellowship :
ISIC will provide following components related to the national to include the following expenses:

  • Monthly nominal Stipend
  • Sponsored Accommodation
  • Stipend for meals and local transportation

IASA will additionally support all expenses related to the international component of the fellowship to include the following expenses:

  • Round trip airfare
  • Lodging
  • Stipend for meals and local transportation
  • Temporary health care coverage

Application procedure:

Twice a year applications will be reviewed. Applications should be submitted six months in advance of the Fellowship start date. Deadline for a Fellowship starting in October will be March 1; for one starting in March will be October 1:

Cycle 1: Applications received between October 2 and March1. Review and selection by April 1. Term starts on October 1 of the same year.

Cycle 2: Applications received between March 2 and October 1. Review and selection by November 1. Term starts on March 1 of the following year.

Fellowship applications will be reviewed and approved in time to allow the fellow to make necessary arrangements. All applications will be reviewed and voted upon by the ISIC- IASA Panel of experts
Once selected a surgeon cannot defer Fellowship to any other months. Interested surgeons should apply for the time period they are able to leave, should they be selected.

  • Resubmissions are at the discretion of ISIC-IASA

Selection Process

  1. The candidates are required to apply for Indo American Spine Alliance Fellowship at isic-iasafellowship@isiconline.org
  2. Candidates are required to mention preferred research topic, along with their expectation of learning from the fellowship program and statement of purpose.
  3. The applicant shall be screened and reviewed by committee of Medical Director cum Chief of Spine Services, Senior Consultant cum Chief of Unit-II Spine Services, Chief of Medical Administration & General Manager, HR .
  4. A monthly stipend with sponsored accommodation shall be provided during fellowship at ISIC
  5. Candidates shall be given preference on the following ;
    • A) Having interest & experience in Spine Surgery
    • B) Research Interest & Publication : Candidates will be evaluated as per their publication & presentations in Journals/ Conferences of repute .
    • C) Statement of Purpose : Candidates will describe the reason for choosing spine as speciality and what he/ she aims to do in future with experience obtained.
    • D) One month assessment period(probation period ) followed by assessment at completion of fellowship .
    • E) Submission of fellowship report at the completion of tenure

Job responsibilities: Planning and execution of the experiments in a timely manner. Performing in vivo study on mice and Rat Result compiling and Result Analysis. Daily reporting of all the activities to the Project lead. Coordination with the collaborating institute for sample analysis and other experimental purposes
